I DIY’s. Last year I wrote a blog on DIY FESTIVE DECORATIONS. This was more for the moms.
This year I wanted to involve the kids a little more. Something that they would do themselves. I hoped for them to get the entire festive feel and prepare something to give to family and friends. That’s when I thought of this DIY Candle Holder (diya).
Me and the kids have worked with salt dough earlier. I like working with salt dough because it is highly versatile, non-messy and make for a wonderful material for kids to explore with. So my 2 yo and I set station for our DIY Candle Holder yesterday morning. I have to say this. my little one was great with the salt dough.
So what would you need for this DIY Candle Holder?
Salt Dough
Tea Candles
Decorations
Paint
Recipe for Salt Dough
Once you’ve got the dough in place, mold it to the shape you desire. We took the impression of tea candles to ensure that they fit in the cavity because that’s what we are going to use it in this DIY Candle Holder.
Once the candle holder was made, we popped it in the microwave for 2 minutes. Traditionally people prefer to bake salt dough to harden it out. But this worked alright for us.
Now this is where we went a little wrong. We placed the glittery stars and decorations on the wet clay and then put the candle holders in the microwave. This made the stars bend and curl (not exactly what we hoped for) and some even fell off!
So for the next batch of these DIY candle holders, we placed them in the microwave before we decorated them. We also painted them with regular acrylic paint and then added all the fancy ‘jazz it up’ decorations.
