R turned 5 last week and needless to say, it was celebration time. So after a super ‘Jake And The Neverland Pirate’ themed elaborate party last year, we decided to downscale things a tad bit this year. But I kind of had a skewed equation on hand here. Downscale I did, but I still managed to go elaborate on the celebration front. With themes trending in these times, R requested for a Superhero Themed event! So Superheroes it was.

- Invite For The Super Hero Party: For the invite, I decided to go eco friendly (half truth, the other half being I’m kind off lazy and can’t get down to delivering printed invites). I owe my gratitude to the What’s App broadcasting feature. A couple of clicks and all the invites were on their way. My designer husband just came up with this awesome morphed image of R on Superman’s Body. Of course everybody loved it!
- The Super Hero Party Decorations: Parties are fun. Planning, preparing up, putting up and then the (oh so excruciating) pulling it all down bit! This part of the evening is something I HATE! So we kept it very simple. Except for one lone Spider Man Birthday Bunting, nothing went up on the walls! We used lots of helium balloons and attached Super Hero print outs to these. We had the ceiling covered with Super Heroes floating all across the party venue. By the end of the evening, each kid carried a bunch of his favourite Super Hero balloons home. Happy guests and happy hosts!

- The No Sew Super Hero Cape Tutorial: R is obsessed with capes at the moment. Not only are they the current love of his life, they also give him (imaginary) superpowers! Since his love for Superman is trending now, I came up with this awesome No Sew Super Hero Cape! No points for guessing why it is a no sew cape! It was fun and easy both just the same!
- The Super Hero Masks: This was the first time I attempted a ‘No Mom’s Attending’ birthday party. With all invitees having confirmed in the affirmative, I had a guest list of 14 boys and 6 girls, all in the robust age of 5-6 years. So I really needed some downtime activity where they could sit and be quietly occupied. This DIY Superhero Mask Activity was a hit! With just a few paper cut outs and some fancy pre-cut and few ready made embellishments, we had on hand some very very cute super heroes!

- The Super Hero Cuffs: These accessories worked marvelously to get kids into character and morph their identities! I cut up the base of some disposable plastic classes that I bought from the neighborhood party store. For the decorations the kids could choose from among Super Hero sticker sheets, fight word stickers and glitter foam cut outs. With these and the masks, we now had on hand a repertoire of the entire Marvel Collection in midget form!

- The Super Sticky Spidey Web Game: Monsoons can be major party poopers!! I tossed around a whole bunch of ideas before I narrowed down on this one. Easily doable in restricted space and quite kineastic by nature. All we needed were webs made out of hoola hoops lying around the house and a bunch of paper napkins! We notched up the fun element by handing out chocolate treats for every successful hit!
- The Super Hero Trap Game: This was our little twist to the traditional musical chairs. Two adults held up a huge net about 5 feet high and the kids passed below it while the Superman Theme Song played in the background. Once the music stopped the net was dropped! The little Super Hero caught in the trap was out of the game! By the end of it all, the Superheroes had smartened up! They were practically flying below the trap! Getting to the winner took a long long time!! The kids had loads of fun squealing, wriggling and pretending to be caught beneath the trap! The sad news: Managing the kids left us no time to take pictures!
- The Super Dad Says: Once the cake was cut, the hungry super heroes needed to be kept busy while the food was spread out. Super dad stepped in and made the kids play ‘The Super Dad Says!’ This was his own creative version of ‘Captain Says.’ The kids stomped, guffawed, bellowed, kicked and punched in the air and promptly took positions to eat as soon as Super Dad called!
- Passing The Iron Man Around: This was an unplanned and an impromptu activity. After the kids had finished their meals and before the mommies came to pick them, we used this filler activity before we ended the party. It’s a fancy name for good ‘ol passing the parcel. Except, we used the Little Iron Man Figurine that I had bought R for his birthday gift.
- The Super Hero Party Favours: We gave away caps with superhero logos on them. We also added a little goodies bag of all kinds of assorted, some super hero related and some not so super hero type things.
It was a super fun evening. My son was happy and that made me very happy.
Mother-O-Pedia’s Two Cents: Once R has opened all his gifts I put away a few in the attic. We take them down at intervals. This way we have new toys for a long time!
